‘Do we really need a brain ?’

We live in a world of illusions. Our world is full of calculated systems and algorithms; they control us. Gone are the days of self-reliance and self-dependence, now days we augment our brains with technology; we are modern day cyborgs, a melding of man and machine.

We have an obsessive, compulsive and almost willing dependence on technology. Our reality is one of pixels and numbers, unrealistic representations through social media and excessive thinking.

My work “Do We Really Need a Brain?” uses digital collage to comment on how evolving technology is taking over the way we see the world and the way we interact in it.

The descension of the new world is a metaphor for the introduction of social technologies, the encroaching pixels signify how it has creeped into our psyche and taken over our brains and
lives, and the rainbow restraint represents the shackles that social media places has placed on us, and the power it has over us. Instead of a device to liberate us and make our life easier, it
is one of restraint, conformity, isolation, categorization and exclusivity.

We have forgotten how to function using our own brains.
